Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 26, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Narratives Inc. (“Narratives,” “we,” “us” or “our”) collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you visit www.narratives.com (the “Site”), watch or read our stories, donate, contact us, work with us, share your story, or appear in one of our videos. Narratives Inc. is a nonprofit organization, tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Narratives Inc. also receives and processes donations and payments made through The Doe (www.thedoe.com), a sister publication operated by The Doe, Inc. This policy covers that information too. The rest of The Doe’s practices are described in The Doe’s Privacy Policy.

The short version

  • We collect what you choose to give us and basic technical information about your visit.
  • Analytics and advertising tools run only as your cookie choices allow, and you can change your choice at any time through Cookie Preferences.
  • We never sell, rent or trade donor names or contact details.
  • Donations are processed by Zeffy and its payment processors. We never see your full card number.
  • You can ask us to access, correct or delete your information by writing to admin@narratives.com, wherever you live.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Donations. Your name, email address, the amount and frequency of your gift, any dedication or note you add and the billing details you enter in the donation form. Zeffy and its payment processors handle your card or bank details.
  • Messages and partnership inquiries. Your name, email address, organization and anything you include when you write to us about a story, a film or working together.
  • Newsletters and updates. Your email address, and your name if you provide it.
  • Accounts and memberships. If you create an account once accounts are available, your email address, name, sign-in details and preferences. For paid memberships, your plan and billing history.
  • Stories you share. If you pitch or submit a story for publication under your name, your name, contact details, biography, photo and the story itself.
  • Interviews and films. If you take part in a Narratives video, interview or documentary, your image, voice, name, the story you tell and any information you share during recording, used as described in the release or consent you give us before recording.

Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, our hosting provider and the tools we use receive technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, the page that referred you, the pages you view, how you scroll and click, how long you stay and an approximate location derived from your IP address. Analytics and session recording tools collect this information only as your cookie choices allow. Our Cookie Policy lists these tools.

2. How we use information

  • To run, secure and improve the Site.
  • To receive donations, send tax receipts, keep donation records and thank our supporters.
  • To send the newsletters and updates you asked for. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.
  • To answer your messages and work with partner organizations.
  • To produce, publish and promote our stories and films, including the stories of people who agree to take part.
  • To provide accounts and memberships when we offer them.
  • To show advertising when we run ads, with personalized ads only where your cookie choices allow.
  • To understand our audience and measure the reach of our work and our fundraising.
  • To prevent fraud, spam and abuse, to meet our legal, tax and reporting obligations as a nonprofit, and to enforce our Terms of Use.
  • For any other purpose with your consent.

3. How we share information

  • The Doe, Inc. For reader and writer services the two publications share, such as accounts, and for donations and payments made through The Doe.
  • Service providers. Companies that work on our behalf, including website hosting and forms (Webflow), donation processing (Zeffy and its payment processors), video hosting (YouTube), analytics and session recording (Google Analytics and Lucky Orange), consent and accessibility tools (ComplyMo), email delivery and IT services. They may use your information only to provide their services to us.
  • Advertising partners. When we run ads and your cookie choices allow it, Google and its partners receive device and usage information to show and measure ads.
  • Public recognition. We name donors publicly, for example in a list of supporters or a film’s credits, only with their permission.
  • Legal, tax and safety. When the law requires it, including reports a nonprofit must file, or to protect the rights, safety or property of the people we work with, our supporters or the public.
  • Organizational changes. If Narratives merges with or transfers its programs to another organization, information may transfer under commitments at least as protective as this policy.
  • With your consent. In any other case, only when you ask us to or agree.

We do not sell personal information, and we never sell, rent or trade donor information. Allowing advertising partners to collect device information through cookies can count as “sharing” under some state laws, and you can turn that off at any time through Cookie Preferences. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as an opt-out.

4. Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to run the Site, remember your choices, understand how the Site is used and, when we run ads, to show and measure them. Strictly necessary cookies are always on. Other cookies run as your choices allow, and you can review or change your choice at any time through Cookie Preferences. The Cookie Policy has the details.

5. Your choices and rights

Some privacy laws do not apply to nonprofit organizations, but we honor the following rights for everyone, wherever you live. You can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
  • correct inaccurate information;
  • delete your information, except what we must keep for tax and legal reasons;
  • stop sending you emails, or stop contacting you about fundraising;
  • stop any sale or sharing of your information for advertising; and
  • withdraw consent you have given.

To make a request, email admin@narratives.com with the subject line “Privacy request.” We will confirm your request by matching it to information we hold and respond within 45 days. If we decline a request, we will explain why, and you may ask us to reconsider by replying to our decision.

If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we rely on your consent (for cookies that are not strictly necessary and, where required, marketing emails), our agreement with you (for donations, accounts and services you request), our legitimate interests in running our nonprofit and understanding our audience in ways that do not override your rights, and our legal obligations. You may also object to processing based on our legitimate interests and lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We are based in the United States, and when we transfer personal information from these regions we rely on safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or a recipient’s certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions.

6. How long we keep information

We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy. Donation records are kept for as long as tax and accounting laws require. Newsletter information is kept until you unsubscribe. Interview footage and releases are kept for as long as the film or story is available and as needed to document permissions. When we no longer need information, we delete it or remove anything that identifies you.

7. Security

We use administrative, technical and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, and we limit access to the people who need it. No website or online service can be completely secure, so we cannot guarantee the security of information you send us.

8. Children

The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Links and embedded content

Our films and video stories are hosted on YouTube, and the Site links to other websites. YouTube and other services may collect information under their own policies, which we do not control.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version here with a new “Last updated” date, and if a change is significant we will give you additional notice, such as an email or a notice on the Site.
